Eighteen

It was late, nearly midnight, and still no word from Sheik Khalid. Sage had been asleep next to Jake, but now was awake and couldn’t seem to go back to sleep. They had made love again, slowly this time, Jake treating her as if she were made of glass.

He was extremely intuitive. He seemed to know when to be rough and when to be gentle. He liked to take control, but he also enjoyed it when she took the lead. The man was the perfect lover. And he was becoming a friend.

A dangerous combination. Sage couldn’t allow her feelings for Jake to grow too deep. He wasn’t a marrying kind of man, and even if he were, he wasn’t the sort who fit into her plans for the future. He was hard-edged, dangerous and sexy. Certainly not the kind of man who enjoyed an evening at the country club.

She stared up at the ceiling. So much was going on in her life. She tried to stay focused, objective, tried not to be afraid that if she walked out of her apartment, someone might try to kill her—or someone she loved.

Her grandfather’s beloved face popped into her head and she felt a rush of fear for him. She wished she had called him before it got too late. What if something had happened? Was he safe or was he in danger?

Next to her, Jake came up on an elbow and looked over her shoulder. “Everything’s going to be all right, Sage. You have to believe that.”

“I should have called Ian.”

“I talked to Ben while you were in the bathroom brushing your teeth. I would have told you, but I got…sidetracked.”

She smiled at the reference to their lovemaking. It was nothing like what she’d experienced with Phillip. Whatever happened, she would always have the memory of her days of fantasy sex with the most virile man she had ever known. “Then Ian’s okay?”

“Both of them are home and settled in. Ben says Ian’s house has a first-class security system.”

She nodded. “That’s good.”

Jake turned around, swung his long legs to the side of the mattress, stood up and reached for his jeans. As he zipped them up, he walked around the bed, bent and picked up her white terry robe. “Come on.” He held it up for her to slide into. “Speaking of Ben, I saw some Ben and Jerry’s in the freezer. Maybe it’ll help you fall asleep.”

Those hot blue eyes were reminding her that he had the perfect sleeping pill, but he didn’t say it.

Sage sighed as she slipped into the robe. “The sheik hasn’t called. The police haven’t come up with anything. I don’t know what to do.”

“We’ll know more tomorrow. Best to take things as they come.”

It seemed like good advice. While Jake got the ice cream out of her stainless Subzero freezer, Sage opened a cupboard and took down a couple of bowls.

He had just finished scooping ice cream when Sage heard the distant chiming of her phone.

“That’s my cell!” Racing back to the bedroom, she grabbed the phone off the side table.
